Melbourne International Coffee Expo

Last chance to enter Australia International Coffee Awards

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) is accepting the last entries into the Australian International Coffee Awards (AICA) until 30 January.

An international coffee roasting competition, AICA gives coffee roasters from around the world the opportunity to benchmark their product against that of their peers.

The AICA comprises categories for espresso, milk-based coffee and filter coffee (syphon, plunger and pour over coffee). This year soy-based coffee has been added to the competition. This category will assess the roasters skill in producing coffee that complements soy milk.

The awards program upholds a rigorous blind judging process from 3 – 6 March, to ensure fair and consistent marking across all categories. Entries will be judged by an elite panel of 36 local coffee industry specialists, selected for their outstanding knowledge and unrivalled expertise. Peter Wolff of Wolff Coffee Roasters will oversee the process as official Head Judge. Peter holds World Barista Championship accreditation, and has acted as a sensory judge across the world.

“The AICA has quickly established a reputation as the superior awards program for our industry,” says Peter. “I’m proud to be a part of the process and I look forward to seeing what the coffee roasters of the world are able to come up with.”

Aida Batlle, a Board member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America, and fifth-generation coffee farmer will join the esteemed judging panel in 2015.

Originally part of the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards, the AICA is now in its third year as an independent awards program with growing interest each year. Entries in 2014 rose by 32 per cent and in 2015 the RASV expects this number to increase significantly once again.

Winners will be announced at A MICE night out, an industry cocktail party on 12 March 2015, as part of the Melbourne International Coffee Expo.
