Feeling the Zest!
This week we have a chat to local legend Rod Greenfield of Zest Coffee and cover a range of topics from greatest achievements to food & coffee!
MICE: What inspires you?
Rod Greenfield: Discovery – at Zest we love exploring and searching and progressing in every facet of specialty coffee. We traverse origins, we tirelessly taste special lots, we experiment with brewing alternatives, we push the boundaries of extraction. This sort of treasure hunt excitement inspires us as we hunt for those gold nuggets and gems that will richly reward those people who look to specialty coffee for an exceptional flavour experience.
MICE: Who would you choose to have a coffee with and why?
Rod: My wife. Life is so hectic and she seems to be the last person I get time to sit down with – to relax, unwind and enjoy a great coffee experience.
MICE: What is the best food to pair a coffee with?
Rod: Through the winter months we were enjoying pairing our Zest blends with rich, exotic desserts that drew out visual and gustatory connections with the coffees. But now the weather has turned hot and summer is upon us, I’m really enjoying cool, refreshing ice filter brews with lovely cold ripe fruits like peaches and white grapes and rock melon.
MICE: Where is your favourite place to enjoy a coffee?
Rod: Good question. Well, I love our boutique cafes, the trend-setters in the cities and the charming country ones overflowing with character and unique personality. But we are firm believers that great specialty coffee shouldn’t be confined or chained down to cafes. Specialty coffee is like a good wine. It should be able to be enjoyed anywhere and everywhere. With friends. Out and about. An aeropress on the beach as the sun rises? An iced filter on the edge of a lake. Somehow I connect our Zest blue with the wide open sky and with the blue of the ocean, beautiful lakes and rivers. So my favourite place – well any of the above. Just put the emphasis on the word enjoy!
