TREE FREE GLOBAL’S COMPOSTABLE COFFEE CUP
Tree Free Global is an Australian company specialising in environmentally friendly disposable coffee cups. It looks at its cups’ impact on the environment in both manufacturing and disposal.
Tree Free Cups are made with bagasse, a by-product of sugarcane. This waste product (previously burnt and so saving emissions) is used to create the paper to make Tree Free Cups. Sugarcane is an annual crop that uses less resources than tree plantations, which can take up to 20 years to mature. Sugarcane is harvested and regrown which prevents soil erosion and preserves natural habitat.
Tree Free Cups’ paper, lining and lids are all plant-based. Being plant-based means the cups will commercially compost. In a home compost trial, the Tree Free Cup broke down completely leaving only nutrients behind in less than 60 days, and Tree Free PLA lids were gone in 90 days.
