STAYING ON TEMPO WITH BEAT COFFEE

Beat Coffee was born from the idea of the endless search, do what inspires you, do it well and keep pushing beyond. We spoke to founder Leigh Mellington to find out more about his story ahead of MICE2019.

Q: How did Beat Coffee first start out?

A: After a long career as an engineer, I was lucky enough to work with some people who were exceptionally passionate about what they were doing. This experience made me take stock and realise that I should be doing the same. So, a roaster was bought and away I went! The last 5 years have been filled with learning and roasting, always looking for the next great coffee and loving every moment of it. We added cold brew to our range 4 years ago and recently opened a coffee shop front to our roastery and brewery in Reservoir.

Q: Favourite origin?

A: I don’t think I actually have a favourite origin, I think it might be like asking a parent who their favourite child is. Although, just between us I am loving a Rwandan filter at the moment…

Q: Best food pairing with coffee?

A: Does ice-cream with espresso or cold brew poured over it count?

Q: Favourite coffee-based drink?

A: If you mix our cold brew concentrate with some baileys, butterscotch schnapps and some cream, you have yourself a pretty handy cocktail.

Q: Which city makes the best coffee in the world?

A: I have been lucky enough to explore coffee shops in many different countries, and you can always find a great coffee if you try. While I was living in NYC, specialty coffee was exploding so I have a soft spot for that city. Having said that I do think that we take our coffee very seriously in Melbourne and that does make it easy to find some of the best coffee I have ever had.

Leigh and the Beat Coffee team will be exhibiting in Roasters Alley next year, make sure you get your tickets so you can drop by their stand to say hello!
