Ziggy Varamulia of Max and Sons took home the ASCA Western Region Barista Championship last weekend, concluding the 2019 ASCA Regional competition circuit.

His routine consisted of providing customers with a distinct and interesting specialty coffee experience. Ziggy said he wanted to “wow and blow minds with what can be done with coffee in the hope that customers can see the value of specialty coffee as more than just a morning pick me up.”

For both his espresso and milk based drinks, Ziggy used used a washed Ethiopian coffee from the TADE GG Estate in the Guji region, roasted by Five Senses Coffee. Ziggy’s advice for baristas aspiring to compete is to “just go for it! It is an amazing experience that will push you to be a better barista. Try it out and see if you fall in love with competing like I did.”
